Enjoy your holiday in Maremma in Tuscany! Magliano has old origins, as we can see from the innumerable archaeological sites and buildings. The tourist is struck by the walls surrounding the old fortress, one of the most important in Maremma. The walls of Magliano show two different architectural styles: it is possible to see the shorter middle-age walls, which were built under the counts Aldobrandeschi in 1323, and the bigger walls, erected by the Inhabitants of Siena, with round towers and loopholes. The part facing the sea is the best-preserved and it is formed by six semicircular towers and by bulwarks with loopholes. It is worth to see Magliano has important middle age buildings, like palazzo Checco il Bello. The churches of S. Martino and S. Giovanni Battista host interesting frescoes by the school of Siena. The church Santissima Annunziata was in origin smaller; in 1400 it was enlarged with a span, an apses and a bell tower. We can admire great artistic treasures inside, like the valuable painting “The Madonna nursing the Child” by Bartolomeo di Lando, called Neroccio. Behind the church there is the famous Olivo della Strega (witch’s olive tree): an over one thousand-year-old tree, whose legendary origin is linked to pagan rites. The story goes that a witch turned into a cat with fire eyes every Friday. Nobody dared approach to this place after the sunset. The monastery of San Bruzio, out of town and symbol of Migliano, is also wrapped in legend. Its picturesque ruins stand lonely among the olive trees. In Romanesque style, the monastery was built about in the 13th century. The nearby hilly village, Pereta, is dominated by a big Tower (Torre dell'Orologio), which was part of the old fortress. There is the church Pieve di S. Maria of the 15th century, whose facade is decorated with a valuable rosette and a bell tower. The oldest building in the village is the little church S. Giovanni Battista of the 13th century, which has baroque and neoclassic decorations inside. At about 11 km away from Magliano, you can find another village, Montiano, dated back to the Roman and Etruscan time. You can enjoy a wonderful view on Marenna from its little squares. It was built at Aldobrandeschi ‘s will between 1000 and 1100. Its strategic position attracted the people, who wanted to rule over Maremma. In Montiano there are few old ruins in comparison with the nearby villages. You can see the walls, but they have been hidden by the innumerable buildings. There is still the gate but it is completely covered by plaster. The circular towers along the walls are not well-preserved: today it is possible to see only some bases. On the other hand the surrounding countryside is immersed in unpolluted nature. In 20 minutes you can drive to wonderful resorts like Argentario or Talamone, in 30 minutes to Pitigliano, Sovana and to the thermal baths of Saturnia, well-known for its sulphurous waters. you can walk in nature for 2 km to Pereta, a small middle-age village with a gate of the 14th century, some picturesque alleys and a tower where Pia dei Tolomei is said to be imprisoned.
